Consequences of Sin – What the Bible says about this!

sin and its consequences in the bible

Introduction

How often have you thought about the consequences of sin and how will it impact your lives? As Christians, we were taught to believe that God is our Father; He forgives our sins, God’s grace is always upon us; the kingdom of God belongs to us and we will be resurrected from the death! In the Bible, it talks about how the wages of sins will lead to our deaths because as much as God loves His children, there will still be consequences of sin when you repeatedly go against Him.

Three consequences of sin

consequences of sin

Sin produces three important consequences according to the Bible. They are:

Physically

When you sin or keep repeating the same sins committed, you are physically exhausted and your physical health is compromised. You may start experiencing poor sleeping patterns, blood pressure, and any other health-related issues which can be harmful to you.

Emotionally

This is another serious health issue caused by sin. When you sin, you know you have sinned. Thus, you start feeling guilty about it which further escalates to overthinking the sins you committed. This may furthermore lead to feelings of hopelessness, emptiness, depression, and in some cases suicidal thoughts as such.

Spiritually

This is perhaps the most common consequences of sin we can find in the Holy Bible. Studies have shown that people who keep on with their sinful activities, start to feel detached from their spiritual life. And as such, their relationship with God becomes distant. And, they start to engage in immoral activities digging deeper into a sinful life.

You start skipping your Bible Study

Sin also causes you to lose your concentration during Bible study sessions. It becomes unfruitful for you. In Psalm 1:1-2, the Psalmist wrote:

“Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or take the path that sinners tread, or sit in the seat of scoffers; but their delight is in the law of the LORD, and on His law, they meditate day and night”.

Sins keep us from leading a peaceful and joyous life

In the Bible, we read about how God wants us to be happy and our joy to be full. In 1 John 1:4, it reads, “These things we write to you that your joy may be full”. However, this seems an impossible feat to achieve as, sins robs you off, your inner peace and joy.

Loss of interest in praying to God

When we keep living a sinner life, we also start to lose interest and confidence in our prayers. In 1 John 3:19-22, it reads,

“And by this, we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him. For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart and knows all things. Beloved if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God. And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight”.

Lose Anticipation of Christ’s Return

This is another consequences of what sinning does to us. When we sin, it causes a strain on our relationship with God and as such, we lose anticipation of Christ’s return.

In 2 Corinthians 5:8, it reads,

“A Christian should be able to stand before the judgment seat with confidence. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ”.

Lose confidence and become fearful

When we Sin, it makes us become more fearful about the sins we committed and how we shall face God on Judgment Day. The confidence that we once had to meet God face to face is replaced with fear.

In Titus 2:13, it reads, “Looking for that blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ” and John 2:28, says:

“And now little children, abide in Him, that when He appears, we may have confidence and not be ashamed before Him at His coming”.

What does the Bible say about sin?

What does the Bible say about sin

As humans, we were born to be destined to die. In the Bible, it dates back to as early as the book of Genesis where God talks about how humans will die. But our death will be temporary and, we will wake up to everlasting life to be one with Him forever.

Genesis 2:17 God says, “Of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die”.

Another beautiful line is found in Ezekiel 18:4, when God says, “Behold, all souls are Mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is Mine; the soul who sins shall die”, how beautiful is this saying? Our souls belong to God and souls who sin, will ultimately face the wrath of death.

In John 6:5 Jesus says, “Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day”. As humans, we are not perfect and we continue to sin more than we can keep count of it.

But at the end of the day, we Christians believe that, as we repent for our sins and receive the body and blood of Jesus at church services, our sins are forgiven. When we sin, it starts to create an estrangement from God, our heavenly Father.

In the Bible, we also come across Paul reminding Titus of the consequences of sin in Titus 1:15, “To the pure all things are pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure, but even their mind and conscience are defiled”.

Bottom Line

The wages of sin is death. We, as humans, have all sinned against God and fall short of His Glory. But God has given us the gift of Salvation and eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans-3:23, Romans 6: 23).

Furthermore, in the Bible, Jeremiah 6:15, God talks about the consequences of how repeated sin will end, “Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? No! They were not at all ashamed; nor did they know how to blush. Therefore they shall fall among those who fall; at the time I punish them, they shall be cast down,” says the LORD.

There is a price to pay for the sins that we commit, it is death and no one can escape from it. But there is good news for us all; we have a way to be saved. And it is through our Lord Jesus Christ we can be cleansed from this sin. He is the only way, the truth, and the life to our Father in heaven.

Jesus Christ has paid the price for us all though He does not deserve it so that we can be saved. The Holy Bible tells us, that if we believe, obey, and accept Christ into our hearts, we will be free from the bondage and consequences of sins.

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

Romans 10: 9
